Office of Investments Internship

Smithsonian Office of Investments (OI)

Due to Covid restrictions and the uncertainty of staff returning to on-site employment, the Office of Investments is considering hiring up to two virtual interns for the 2021 summer period. Should circumstances change, interns will be permitted to work from the office. A virtual internship with the Office of Investments is an opportunity for students with a passion for and curiosity in institutional investment management to gain practical skills and experience. The program offers a full-time virtual summer program in our Washington, DC office.

The Office of Investments (OI) manages investments and is responsible for the growth, safety, and integrity of the Institution’s financial assets.

The Smithsonian Institution’s $2.0 billion endowment is a diversified portfolio invested with high quality managers and long-term partnerships aligned with endowment goals and interests. The Endowment is managed as a long-term pool of capital to exist in perpetuity and focuses on absolute rather than relative performance. The Office of Investments was established in 2006 and is comprised of six investment professionals and four operations and administrative professionals.

Learning objectives for interns include:

  • Understand OI’s day-to-day procedures through involvement in administrative tasks.
  • Gain basic knowledge about the Institution’s investment management strategy, asset classes and investment process.
  • Hone research and analytical skills by assisting with various research projects (gathering data, summarizing information, using Bloomberg, preparing manager reviews, etc.).
  • Strengthen written and oral skills through presentations, reports and correspondence.

Desired Prerequisites:

Rising undergraduate sophomores, juniors or seniors studying business, economics, mathematics or related fields. Other majors welcome to apply. Must be organized, detail-oriented, have strong quantitative/analytical skills, and be proficient in Excel.

Summer internships are anticipated to begin in early June and end in mid-August. Hours are full-time (40 hours/week) for 10 weeks.

Stipend:
$3,000/term for 40 hours/week.
