Web Development Internship

This internship is located in the Office of Human Resources (OHR), Smithsonian Institution (SI). The mission is to develop and to advise SI leadership and employees on human resource policies and regulations; to maintain an employee accountability system; and to provide training and to assist with employee development.

Learning Objectives

An overall understanding of the various elements of HR

-Challenges facing HR, from the perspective of each HR Manager and the Director

-A better understanding of how HR relates to each of the other units

-Day to Day operations of the HR employees, in various fields (benefits, employee development, etc.)

-What skills would be needed to succeed in this field

The intern will assist the Office of the Director and Benefits Branch with developing the look and feel for a pilot OHR Web sites, and is responsible for site navigation design and visual execution.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop new Web applications as identified by supervisor and management through packaged and customized applications.
  • Maintain and enhance existing Web applications
  • Perform complete testing of Web applications system, engaging users as necessary
  • Design and implement user-driven templates, databases and interfaces for ease of use
  • Develop database-driven Web interfaces for rapid, real-time information sharing
  • Develop external Web portals allowing users to input and retrieve accurate information
  • Candidate must be a team player, willing to teach and to learn.

The Ideal Candidate will also Possess the Following Skills:

  • Able to work independently and efficiently to meet deadlines
  • Able to promptly answer support related email, phone calls and other electronic communications
  • Self motivated, detail-oriented and organized
  • Experience with hardware and software issues
  • Proficient in Internet related applications such as E-Mail clients, FTP clients and Web Browsers
  • Excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills
  • Able to work well in a team/project based environment
