Peru Comes to You!
Last week, Smithsonian interns had the opportunity to tour the 2015 Smithsonian Folklife Festival behind the scenes as staff developed different activities and events. Today, June 24th, interns were able to see the finished product as the festival commenced their annual celebration with an exciting Opening Ceremony.
Many gathered at the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAA) to see the ceremony outside the amphitheater. This year’s festival honors the culture of Peru through music, dance and traditional dishes. These elements were displayed within a performance by musicians playing the Cajon, a traditional Peruvian instrument.
Colorful costumes could be seen everywhere as lively festival goers wore outfits exclusively for Peruvian special occasions. Visiting Interns were able to learn even more about Peru and it’s fascinating history throughout the performance.
