2015 Smithsonian Associates Summer Museum Experience Internship

Posted on May 29, 2015 by in The OFI Blog

HatThe Smithsonian Associates (SA) are currently accepting applications for their 2015 Summer museum experience internship.

PROJECT TITLE: The Smithsonian Associates: Summer Museum Experience

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Our Summer Sleepover Season (12 Sleepovers over a 3 month period, each requiring 25 - 30 volunteers) requires a full time intern to help with recruiting and screening new volunteers each week, and assist with scheduling and tracking volunteer attendance using our EVANS database. This intern would also be responsible for conducting reference checks by phone. All of these duties would be done after adequate training by Jenna Jones, the Volunteer Coordinator at the Associates.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. The intern will learn the basic “nuts and bolts” of volunteer management of episodic volunteers (special events, not badged or long term volunteers).

2. The intern will gain an understanding of what motivates these volunteers, and how to best communicate with them (largely based on volunteers’ age group differences).

3. This opportunity also includes hands on learning about how to use a very sophisticated and powerful database, EVANS. They will learn how to run reports that are essential to our Sleepovers operations using this database.

4. The intern will also learn about how to plan a formal but fun large-scale annual volunteer appreciation party. This will be another area of focus for the volunteer office this summer.

Eligibility: This internship is open to all applicants who are interested in learning more about museum educational programming.

This internship is offered from the beginning of June to the end of August. The opportunity is best suited for an intern who can commit to interning at least three days a week. However, some of this time might involve evenings and weekends.

HOW TO APPLY:

Interested applicants must send a resume and cover letter as a single pdf file to Jenna Jones at JonesJeL@si.edu no later than Friday 6/5/15.
