Freshwater Mollusk Curation Internship

Are you interested in learning more about mollusks and their taxonomy, then this internship opportunity may be for you!

PROJECT TITLE: Curation of alcohol-preserved collections of freshwater mollusks

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Intern will help complete two major curation projects in the Department of Invertebrate Zoology. The first project involves reorganization of a large collection (several thousand jars) of tiny freshwater snails (Hydrobiidae and related families). The second project involves cataloging and physical curation of a collection of rare freshwater mussels from eastern North America (USA and Mexico). Most of the work will be done at the Museum Support Center in Anacostia, Maryland. The intern will work closely with the curator in charge and with several members of the collections management staff.

QUALIFICATIONS: Undergraduate coursework in zoology, good familiarity with Microsoft Excel; interest in natural history collections.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Intern will gain knowledge of mollusks and their taxonomy, museum collections procedures, and data-basing techniques. Experience will be especially valuable for students interested in pursuing a career in a natural history museum.

TIMETABLE: Project can be completed in 2-3 months.
