OIR Internship
The Office of International Relations (OIR) at the Smithsonian Institution serves at the central point for Institution-wide advice, insight, analysis, and coordination of all international activities of the Institution.
OIR is the central external representative of international programs for the Institution, and leads institutional relationships with US government and international organizations, including the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Agency for International Development, foreign embassies, and other governmental and private organizations in the U.S. and abroad.
OIR is currently offering an internship to support us with our archives project. We currently have nearly 40 years of institutional history housed within our office. We are working with Smithsonian Archives to help sort and catalogue our documents. Documents include information about the work that the Smithsonian has done internationally throughout the institution’s history. We are seeking an intern who is interested in gaining experience in international relations, documenting institutional history, and/or cataloging and archiving. The intern will work with the supervisor to set goals and will be guided by the following general learning objectives:
- Gain introductory skills in archiving and cataloging institutional history
- Work in coordination with Smithsonian Archives to learn about their system and processes
- Learn about the international activities carried out by the institution throughout its history
Qualifications: This position is designed for a degree-seeking student, preferably in the field of International Affairs, History, Library Science or related field. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Excel is essential. Prior experience in a cross-cultural setting as well as an office environment is preferred. Candidate must also be self-motivated, organized, and detail oriented.
