James Renwick Fellowship in American Craft

The James Renwick Fellowship in American Craft applications are now open!

The Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) invite applications for the 2015-2016 James Renwick Fellowship in American Craft. This fellowship is available for research in American craft or decorative arts from the nineteenth century to the present. Fellowships are residential and support independent and dissertation research. Funding is available for a full-year predoctoral fellowship or a postdoctoral or senior appointment of up to eight months. Scholars with equivalent professional experience and publication history may also apply.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum’s collection spans the nation’s artistic heritage, representing outstanding visual accomplishments from the seventeenth century to the present day. Modern and contemporary American craft is featured in the Renwick Gallery, a branch of the Museum located across from the White House that will reopen in 2015 following a major renovation. Each scholar is provided a carrel in the Fellowship Office, located across the street from the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Available research resources there include a 180,000-volume library that specializes in American art, craft, history, and biography; the Archives of American Art; the graphics collections of American Art and the Portrait Gallery; the Joseph Cornell Study Center and the Nam June Paik Archive; as well as a variety of image collections and research databases.
