National Museum of American History (NMAH)’s Interns and Fellows Program Manager, Omar Eaton-Martinez, hosted an important talk about increasing diversity among academic appointees at the Smithsonian Institution. He stressed the importance of diversity and inclusion of underrepresented groups in academic appointments across the Smithsonian and also spoke about his effort to recruit more diverse interns, fellows, and research associates. Already, his efforts have included a Smithsonian presence at HACU (Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities)’s annual conference, the creation of many committees within the Smithsonian for diversity, including Unit Level Diversity Councils and the OFI Diversity Working Committee, as well as forming ties with a number of colleges and universities across the country. Omar showed how far the Smithsonian has come in diversifying its academic appointees and how he has paved the road to further increase the Smithsonian’s diversity.
