Yesterday, July 2nd, the OFI interns went to the Folklife Festival. The Smithsonian puts on the Folklife festival for two weeks every summer. It is the largest annual cultural event in the U.S capital. This year it runs from June 26th-30th to July 3rd-7th. The festival is an international exposition of living cultural heritage that takes place outdoors on the National Mall. The interns were very excited to go, partly because of the free food tickets we received to use in the food tents. The festival’s food tents have cuisine from around the world including, Indian and Spanish food along with some American classics. The chicken and waffle tent was the most popular and had a long line throughout the day. We sampled the steak fajitas, some Indian curry and of course, the traditional American burger. To wash these foods down, we visited the beverage stand and got the limeade and a few mango strawberry smoothies; a great way to cool down in the hot weather. Along with international food, the festival has other attractions, such as tents selling handmade crafts, storytelling , dance, and narrative sessions for discussing cultural issues. This festival is a must see for everyone.
